What is monkey bread?

Monkey bread is a sweet, soft, gooey bread made from tiny balls of dough coated in butter and sugar and often baked in a bundt pan. It is typically served as a breakfast or dessert item and served warmly.

The dough balls are often coated in a mixture of sugar, cinnamon, and other sweet spices before being baked. The finished bread is usually pulled apart by hand and served in small pieces.

Monkey bread is often enjoyed with a drizzle of icing or glaze. It is a popular treat in the United States and is enjoyed by people of all ages.

Why is it called monkey bread?

There are a few theories about the origin of the name “monkey bread.” One idea is that the bread gets its name from how it is typically served, with people pulling off small pieces of the soft and gooey bread and eating it with their hands, much like a monkey might do.

Another theory is that the bread is called monkey bread because it is so sweet and delicious that it is hard to resist, much like a monkey might be drawn to a tasty treat.

It is also possible that the name “monkey bread” comes from the playful, fun nature of the bread itself. Monkey bread is often served at gatherings and celebrations, and its sweet, gooey, and indulgent nature makes it a popular treat for children and adults alike.

Regardless of the origins of its name, monkey bread is a beloved treat that many people around the world enjoy.

Ingredients for the bread

  • Almond milk or any other dairy-free milk, like oat or rice
  • Vegan butter, choose your favorite butter.
  • Yeast, I like to use instant yeast.
  • Sugar cane sugar is fine.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt, I use Kosher salt.
  • For the dough coating: butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon.
  • For the glaze: powdered sugar, dairy-free milk, and vanilla extract.

How to make monkey bread from scratch

  • Mix flour, sugar, and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Add the warm milk and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled.
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). Grease a bundt pan or deep dish pie pan with vegan butter.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into about 50 small balls, smaller than a golf ball. Mix the melted vegan butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Dip each dough ball in the butter mixture, coating it evenly. Place the dough balls in the prepared pan, cover and let it rise for a second time for about 30 minutes.
  • Bake the monkey bread for about 25-30 minutes, until it is a light golden brown color and the inside is soft and gooey.
  • Let the monkey bread cool in the pan for about 5 minutes, then turn it onto a serving plate. Let it cool completely, make the glaze, drizzle on top and enjoy.

Tips & substitutions

  • Dough. You can use homemade or store-bought dough for your monkey bread. Use a good-quality, soft, and slightly sweet dough. Just make sure it’s soft and slightly sweet to complement the sweet flavors of the bread.
  • Coat thoroughly. . Make sure to coat the dough balls thoroughly in the mixture of melted butter and cinnamon sugar before placing them in the pan. This will help the dough balls stick together and give the monkey bread its gooey, caramelized texture.
  • Experiment with different flavor combinations. You can add spices, such as cardamon or nutmeg, to the sugar mixture for added flavor. You can add dried fruit, nuts, or chocolate chips to the dough balls for an extra special twist on the classic recipe.

  • The pan. Use a bundt pan or deep pie pan for baking the monkey bread. These pans will help the dough balls bake evenly and give the monkey bread a nice shape.
  • Don’t overbake the vegan monkey bread. You want the dough balls to be soft and gooey, not dry and hard. Keep an eye on the bread as it bakes, and take it out of the oven when it is a light golden brown.
  • Cool. Let the monkey bread cool slightly before serving. This will help the bread hold its shape and make it easier to pull apart and serve. You can also drizzle a simple icing or glaze over the top of the bread before serving for an extra special touch.
  • Serve the monkey bread warm, pulling it apart with your hands. Enjoy!
